All Saints church - view east

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: All Saints church - view east. All Saints church > 1637776 is situated west of Main Road, the main thoroughfare through the village of Narborough. The building has features of many periods and was greatly restored in the 19th century. The two large tomb recesses which can be seen in the exterior south aisle wall are believed to be the burial places of the founder and his wife. Unusually, the tower is situated at the west end of the south aisle; dating from the 13th century it is older than any of the features in this aisle. The north arcade dates from the 14th century and the south arcade was constructed a little later. The C15 font bowl > 1638076 is carved with shields and fleurons. There are a number of 16th century brasses > 1638050 some on the chancel floor, others mounted on the chancel wall. A large monument on the chancel north wall commemorates Sir Clement Spelman (1607) and his wife > 1638038. Another Clement Spelman (1679) stands on a plinth by the south wall > 1638045. He was the Recorder of Nottingham. During a Victorian restoration it was discovered that his coffin stood upright inside the plinth - he appears to have insisted on this to avoid being trodden upon. The chancel north window contains a collection of fragments of early C15 glass > 1638061 depicting the 9 orders of angels. The heraldic panels > 1638056 in the main lights are dated from 1578.
