Title
a medieval, D shaped, zoomorphic buckle
Description
English: A cast copper alloy, D shaped, single loop, medieval buckle, dating from 1200-1400. There is a narrowed and offset strap bar, typical of medieval buckles, and the sides of the buckle are convex. The outer edge is thickened, expanded and widens out into a roughly triangular shape, bevelled on the underside so the outer edge is angled. The buckle is zoomorphic; this triangular section is incised with four simple, straight grooves arranged to form a face and a pair of grooves at each side to define the ears. The pin is missing. The buckle has a patchy, dark green patina. It is 20.7mm long, 17.3mm wide and 6.4mm thick. It weighs 3.57gm. Compare SWYOR-D0E9E8, DENO-2F1F47, LON-A6CE93 and LIN-E60B82 for the general style, though none is an exact match.
