Summary
[edit]Description0082423 Rudabai Step Well, Adalaj Gujarat 146.jpg |
English: The Rudabai stepwell – also known as Adalaj Ni Vav, Adalaj Stepwell, or Rudabai Ki Vav – is located about 20 kilometers north of Ahmedabad in Gujarat. It is a five-storey underground open stone structure built in the 15th-century that provides access to the ground water. Notable for its intricately carved pillars and large spaces, the site includes a Hindu temple. The stepwell includes Devanagari inscriptions from 15th-century as well as some Hindu artwork such as Ganesha, Parvati, Bhairava with a damaru, Shardula, Navgraha and others. The design shows a fusion of Indo-Islamic elements into a predominantly pre-Islamic Maru-Gurjar architecture.
The structure is aligned north-south. It has three entrances/exits. The stepwell has a square plan, mirroring a temple-mandapa design upside down. The well also provides spiral staircases. According to the inscribed marble slab on the 1st floor near the eastern entry, the stepwell was built by Queen Ruda – the wife of Virsingh when Muhmud Badshah was ruling this region. Dated samvat 1555 (1498 CE), the inscription invokes Ganesha (Vinayaka) and mentions the birth of son Karna. |
