Description |
Horizontal, black and white postcard showing buildings at Camp Valdahon, France, possibly the north side of the camp. The buildings appear to be row houses and have small flights of stairs leading to several doors. There are lights above each door. The buildings may be barracks. Several men are standing around the buildings. A caption typed along the upper edge of the postcard reads: "8. Camp de Valdahon -- Cote Nord." A caption typed along the bottom edge of the postcard reads: "Raoul Mabile, photog, La Valdahon (Doubs)." The postcard is addressed to Mrs. O'Toole [Elizabeth Robin O'Toole], 1912 Dodier St., St. Louis, Mo. It was written by Edward R. Dependahl to Mrs. O'Toole, the mother of his fiancee Mildred, while he was serving in France just after World War I. The postcard is dated December 30, 1918, and the handwritten note on the back reads: "ER Dependahl, U.S. Army, France, Soldiers Mail. Dear Mother, Nothing new in France and waiting paiently [sic] to get word to pack up and go home but think it will be quite a few days before we hear it but I know its coming so I am not worring [sic]. Love Ed." A stamp and signature indicate that the note passed the censors. |
