האתר המצולם נמצא בצמוד לבית כנסת האר"י האשכנזי בעיר העתיקה בצפת. האתר נקרא על פי המסורת "חקל תפוחין קדישין" (שדה התפוחים הקדושים) – האר"י הקדוש ותלמידיו היו יוצאים לקבל את השבת ברחבה שליד בית הכנסת הצופה כלפי הר מירון וקבר רשב"י (מערב) ובתחתית הרבה היה שדה פתוח. המושג עצמו מופיע כמה פעמים בזוהר ובקבלה. חקל= שדה. הכוונה היא לאותו מקום שהוא גן אלוקים, בו מצויה הקדושה. בית-הכנסת נבנה בידי תלמידי האר"י, נהרס ברעש של 1837 ושוקם ב-1857.

על פי המסורת, זהו המקום המסוגל לפנימיות ולקדושה והנכנס בשעריה מריח את ריח השדה אשר ברכו ה'.
