Undelete request for an administrator

Some time ago the files File:Uncle_Dave_Macon_(4523593502).jpg and File:Uncle_Dave_Macon_(4522958601).jpg were deleted. However they may be legal, if I regard the template:PD-US-no notice which is used on File:Uncle Dave Macon Billboard.jpg. I would like to request an administrator to re-evaluate whether the first two files meet the criteria of PD-US-no notice. If so, I would like to request to undelete the two images. Thank you for reconsidering. Ymnes (talk) 16:26, 29 February 2016 (UTC)

This help desk doesn't necessarily get a lot of attention from administrators. You should probably just go ahead and request undeletion, mentioning the PD tag you think applies. It's okay if you're not sure – just say so and provide whatever information you can. You'll most likely be expected to provide some evidence of publication without a copyright notice between 1923 and 1977. LX (talk, contribs) 19:37, 29 February 2016 (UTC)
Thank you for your advice! Ymnes (talk) 15:42, 1 March 2016 (UTC)

Cover image upload

Can you advise on the simplest way to add a non-free media use rationale?

I am adding it directly for to the Proceedings of the Royal Society article for magazine cover image I have uploaded, but someone is deleting it before I finish.

Can you help? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Philh100 (talk • contribs)

It's for use in an article at the English Wikipedia. I gave instructions in [1] and see you have since uploaded several covers to the English Wikipedia where they belong when they are non-free. PrimeHunter (talk) 15:33, 2 March 2016 (UTC)

Theodore Psalter images from the British Library under Creative Commons

I'm working with an art history class, and a student (whose paper is, of course, due at midnight tonight!) asked me how to upload some images she wanted to use for an article on the Theodore Psalter. I've uploaded them as File:Theodore Psalter ff 189v-191.png , File:Theodore Psalter 2.png, and File:Theodore Psalter 3.png. I'm not expert on copyright; I think these may be OK but I thought I should ask here to be sure.

The British Library says here that they release some images under Creative Commons, though they don't say which CC license they're using. They also don't say how to tell which images are CC. The student emailed the BL and was told this: "The images on the Digitised Manuscripts website are low res, and are free to use, provided they are British Library collection items. We must also ask if you could please credit the library as the original source: © The British Library Board, (followed by the reference/shelfmark)." I've pasted that into the license section of these images, but I suspect this doesn't fill the requirements quite correctly. Any advice on what to do next? There are three more images that the student wants to upload; I'll do those next while waiting to hear back here.

Thanks for any help. Mike Christie (talk) 01:13, 7 March 2016 (UTC)

Mike Christie, those files are in public domain, not under cc-by, look the date. I fixed one of them >>> [2], could do the same for the rest? -- RTA 19:04, 7 March 2016 (UTC)
I knew that applied to 2-D art; I didn't know that would apply here. Yes, please do fix them -- thanks! Mike Christie (talk) 22:58, 7 March 2016 (UTC)

MP4 / Firefogg / Video Upload Wizard

I am having difficulty using the upload file wizard. It allows me to select a MP4 file - after I uploaded Firefogg. But then it just stays at that step of uploading files and doesn't progress to "release rights." Do I need to convert that file before using the wizard? (I'll see if I can figure that out.)--Lucas559 (talk) 20:05, 7 March 2016 (UTC)

I made a .webm video file. (That conversion took a long time.) Still stalls before "release rights." --Lucas559 (talk) 20:26, 7 March 2016 (UTC)
Conversion progress isn't shown in Firefogg upload wizard and it takes ages to convert. I usually watch how the temporary file created by Firefogg is growing. For uploading larger files I always use my custom crafted script. But you have to copy the file description markup from one of your other files. If the file is below 100 MiB, you may also try Commons:Upload. -- Rillke(q?) 21:31, 7 March 2016 (UTC)

I tried uploading a video for the first time. It is in MOV format - commons said that it was not a free format and that I could install an extension to FireFox to convert it. I did that, but now when I select the file to upload, nothing happens. What is wrong? Bubba73 (talk) 21:45, 9 March 2016 (UTC)

Is really nothing happen or can you see the firefogg process taking a lot of CPU resources in your task manager (windows)? It is probably easier to just use toollabs:videoconvert -- Rillke(q?) 21:53, 9 March 2016 (UTC)
It seems that nothing is happening. After starting, it is giving the screen with "upload" highlighted and the "add more files" button. It is a 22-second, 36MB file. Maybe it is just taking a long time, but I let it sit there for a few minutes and there is no indication that it is doing anything. Bubba73 (talk) 23:41, 9 March 2016 (UTC)
Right now I'm trying Commons Video Convert. After a minute or two it said that it had converted 17.95 seconds, but now it has been sitting there for several minutes with no apparent progress. Bubba73 (talk) 23:57, 9 March 2016 (UTC)
Fifteen minutes later it is still just sitting there, showing 17.95 seconds converted. Bubba73 (talk) 00:12, 10 March 2016 (UTC)
It still shows no more progress. Bubba73 (talk) 00:31, 10 March 2016 (UTC)

After 30-something minutes, I gave up on that too and used Theora, which did it in a minute or two. Bubba73 (talk) 00:46, 10 March 2016 (UTC)

Do you have a link to the page where you found the image? With only a direct link we cannot even tell why the image might be within scope, much less whether its license is ok. --rimshottalk 08:01, 6 March 2016 (UTC)

The page has no copyright information, which means that this is the default case: the image is copyright protected and not under a free license. There is no indication for the situation to be otherwise. --rimshottalk 22:53, 10 March 2016 (UTC)

Today I can't upload photos. It just sits there spinning and does nothing. Is there a problem? Bubba73 (talk) 18:16, 10 March 2016 (UTC)

Hi Bubba73! Sadly, the Upload Wizard (the default interface for uploading files to Commons) is pretty much in a perpetual state of brokenness. It isn't broken for everyone all the time, but I don't recall a time since it was introduced that we went more than a few days without people reporting enigmatic problems with indefinitely spinning wheels, unhelpful error messages, or simply no way to move forward. Have you tried Commons:Upload? It tends to be much more reliable than the Wizard. LX (talk, contribs) 18:25, 10 March 2016 (UTC)

Release rights

Hello,

currently, I am preparing a new article of a German art dealer. I asked him personally if he can provide me a photo of him. He then sent me a photo and told me that the copyright holder of the photo gave permission to use it for wikipedia.

Now my question: Using the upload wizard, what in this case is appropriate to choose as regards the options "Now tell us why you are sure you have the right to publish this work"?

Thank you very much.

Sincerely, bfait — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bfait (talk • contribs) 12:33, 13 March 2016‎ (UTC)

The reason you cannot find an appropriate choice is that a permission limited to use on Wikipedia is not sufficient for hosting the photo on Commons. Wikimedia Commons (this site) is a repository of free, educational media files used by Wikipedia, other Wikimedia projects, and others. The free part is very important – it's a founding principle of Commons that we should only host content that can be used by anyone for any purpose. Therefore, we cannot host this photo unless the copyright holder agrees to publish it under a license that allows anyone to use, modify and redistribute it for any purpose, including commercial purposes. Please see Commons:OTRS for how to obtain and submit such a permission. LX (talk, contribs) 13:51, 13 March 2016 (UTC)

Uploading (embed) infograph in wikimedia/wikipedia

Good afternoon!

I need some help about changing picture in wikipedia (image) with interactive infograph from infogram program. Is there possibility to change it directly in wikipedia or shall I upload infograph (which has its own code and not link) in Wikimedia first and there link or share it in Wikipedia? I have no tehnical skills and I do it for the first time, so any easy sugestions will be helpful.

Thank You, Tina — Preceding unsigned comment added by Regional stat (talk • contribs) 08:52, 15 March 2016‎ (UTC)

Unless I'm misunderstanding you, what you want to do is probably not possible. Unless the content you wish to add is in one of the formats listed at Commons:Project scope/Allowable file types (none of which are interactive), it cannot be uploaded to Commons, and externally hosted content cannot be embedded on Wikipedia. If I've misunderstood your question, please provide some more specifics on what it is you're trying to do. LX (talk, contribs) 17:40, 15 March 2016 (UTC)
Maybe mw:Extension:Graph can help you? There are some examples and a user guide. In this case, you could embed the data directly into a wiki-page without uploading. -- Rillke(q?) 18:10, 15 March 2016 (UTC)

Problem with Uploading a new version of the same image

Hello all, recently I have uploaded an image that needed to be cleaned up. See the case here. I restored it and then I tried to uploaded the new restored version of the image. I am sure that I chose and uploaded the new restored images, however when I uploaded it I realized that it was the previous version. Trying to fix this, I created a mess, by uploading and reverting the same image again and again. I am sorry for that. So, my questions are: 1) Is there any administrator who is willing to delete all these unnecessary uploading images? I thank him/her in advance. and 2) Do you have any idea, why although I uploaded the right cleaned image, I can see only the older one? Thank you very much for your help!!! EVDiam (talk) 16:53, 17 March 2016 (UTC)

After uploading a new version and if you can't see any change, first do a browser side cache deletion on the file description page affected, and if that doesn't help, c.f. Help:Purge for how to force the server to re-consider its position on the thumbnail appearance. Administrators usually don't delete or clean up image history for you at Commons as it is time-consuming and simply not required (it doesn't free storage and always raises the impression of conspiratorial on-goings, if not done properly). -- Rillke(q?) 14:48, 18 March 2016 (UTC)
I highly recommend either the 'LocalLiveClock' or 'UTCLiveClock' gadgets (in the 'Interface:Other' section of the gadgets page of preferences) as the clock they provide is also a 'purge' button... purging (which makes the webserver recreate it's locally cached version of a page) resolves most issues. In the first two cases I checked, you made a derivative work of another person's copyrighted work: File:“The Loved One” on the cover of ARTCO Magazine, China.jpg, a magazine cover and Commons:Deletion requests/Files uploaded by Powenservice, a sculpture. This does not give you the copyright to the sculpture, so while you own the photos, you are not allowed to freely license them without permission from the original artist. --rimshottalk 19:32, 16 March 2016 (UTC)

Help uploading a specific public domain video

@Nizolan: I could probably do it, but maybe we can resolve the technical issue you're having. Which upload tool are you using (UploadWizard?) and what's the exact error message you're getting, if any? (A screenshot would be the best.) Matma Rex (talk) 20:28, 28 March 2016 (UTC)
I'm going to try again with a different setup in a bit, I'll ping with details if it doesn't work. Many thanks. Nizolan (talk) 09:01, 30 March 2016 (UTC)
