Rationale, discussion and results

[edit]

Reason: I came across a photoshopped map that was being used quite widely on multiple Wikipedias and submitted a deletion request for it. I also found that the uploader, John Mckalie has been blocked as one of many socks of a user named Mrpontiac1 on the English Wikipedia. Now, Mrpontiac1 has a huge list of sock accounts and I've taken the liberty of copying the list over here. As you can see, a number of the socks have accounts here and only one of them appears to have been blocked. Thanks.Cpt.a.haddock (talk) 08:29, 2 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

P.S. While it will be good to block all these socks and any others uncovered by checkuser, will it also be possible to list files uploaded by them so that they can be checked for mischievous manipulation? Thanks.--Cpt.a.haddock (talk) 08:30, 2 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

LAKSJD1 and Team John Cena have since been blocked on Commons.   — Jeff G. ツ 12:29, 29 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Firstly, there is no prohibition on having multiple accounts as long as they are not used disruptively/in violation of policy. Of the three accounts that are blocked on the Commons (Freak'n, LAKSJD1, Team John Cena--none of which is the master), one is for a COM:IU concern and two are for abuse of multiple accounts; those latter two accounts each have zero edits on the Commons, so those two blocks were apparently based on activity on a sister site and are thus not in line with policy. Secondly, and relatedly, we require requests to "Show what the disruption to the project is" (COM:CHECK). I don't see that was done here. A sock farm on a sister site, in and of itself, is not necessarily disruption to the project (Commons). What accounts are still active? What are the disruptive edits? I don't say they do or don't exist, only that you haven't presented them if they do. Of the sample I looked at, all are Stale anyway. As presented, this appears to be a request to look at a 5-year-old sockfarm from en.wiki whose relationship to the Commons is primarily accounts attached as a SUL function. Unless there is additional or clarifying information (this is extreme TL;DR) I would say this should be Declined per Checkuser is not for fishing Эlcobbola talk 20:37, 30 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
