RCE images
[edit]The RCE requested us to delete 5.074 files, due to the size a separate list can be found at:
In 2011 the Rijksdienst voor Cultureel Erfgoed (RCE) released over 500.000 images under a cc-by-sa license. In 2012 and 2013, 466.000 of these images have been uploaded to Commons, after a higher resolution release had been discussed. Information about the image release can be found at Commons:Rijksdienst voor het Cultureel Erfgoed, OTRS-ticket: ticket:2012121010014322 (dutch), and their own website (dutch). Recently they found out that a number of images which are not supposed to be visible are on Commons (and Wikipedia). These images mainly have privacy, copyright and theft issues (sensitive art). The images were until recent accessible by direct links on their site, but not by using the search function. This bug has been fixed now, and images are no longer visible on their website in any way. Part of the images have been deleted from their site following third party requests or claims. All of the images are currently not visible on their site. We have a very good contact with the RCE, and I think it is important to preserve this cooperation, thus, courtesy deletion might apply besides legal considerations. The 5.074 images are mainly from interiors (and exterior art: statues) in which items are very vulnerable for theft. If there are any questions to the RCE about the situation I will forward (and translate) those. -- Basvb (talk) 13:53, 27 June 2014 (UTC) PS: I did not tag the images due to the high number, I have informed the uploader.
- I've got a more elaborate explanation from the RCE this morning. Images which are "sensitive" have been indexed since the release. Based on third party claims and request other images have entered this category. Reasons why the images are not visible are: Privacy sensitivity, copyright (they don't own the images, or it's deritave work which they don't own), portrait right, and unclarity on any of the reasons. I don't know to which extend Commons regards privacy of the home owners (including theft sensitivity) as a deletion reason (although I would argue that courtesy deletion applies). The copyright issue images seem clear cut to me, these have no place on Commons. Mvg, Basvb (talk) 10:09, 30 June 2014 (UTC)
Questions to the RCE
[edit]Any specific questions I should forward? --Basvb (talk) 13:53, 27 June 2014 (UTC):
General discussion
[edit]- Keep the images were released under a free license and freely available on their website. I'm not convinced by the arguments. No valid reason for deletion. Multichill (talk) 18:18, 27 June 2014 (UTC)
Dear Multichill: these images are not visible on our own website and never were! We think this question is reasonable. RCE — Preceding unsigned comment added by 212.159.201.76 (talk • contribs)
- Well, they where visible at some time only not via the search function but via a direct link. I saw this myself. However I would Support a courtesy deletion of this images. It is only a small number of the entire collection and there are several concerns including the copyright. This makes the whole set not okey beyond a reasonable doubt. @RCE please don't use people's real name to adress them but their nickname since that is often seen as a privacy violation. Image specific discussion
[edit]The full list of images can be found at Commons:Deletion requests/RCE images/files, if there are specific images which should be excepted (both directions) discussion here will prevent the general discussion to be disturbed (the images are numbered). --Basvb (talk) 13:53, 27 June 2014 (UTC):
Deleted: it is clear that some images had never to be published: neither on Commons, nor on the own site of the RCE or some of them are edited or deleted after privacy complaints (COM:PERSON). It's finally just 1% of the whole donation. Deleting them is not a very big issue and keeping could cause problems for potential new content donations. JurgenNL (talk) 11:57, 4 July 2014 (UTC)
