Special reports request: Categories with only redcats or WD-Infobox cats
[edit]During this discussion at VillagePump, Special:UncategorizedCategories was ~completed down to the ~average number of new uncategorized cats. It has been a rare case of backlogs getting (basically) completed; it was started by @Jmabel: and I think extensively involving @Gildir and Billinghurst: . However, two types of categories are not included in these reports. I was wondering if there could be new reports for these two:
- Categories with only redcategories (categories that don't yet exist)
- Categories with only Wikidata Infobox categories like "Category:Uses of Wikidata Infobox" (cats set by {{Wikidata Infobox}} – example 2)
Could these please be created? What do you think about this? If this is not the best place to ask about this, what would be a better place? (for example, does it need a phabricator issue)
Especially the first seems useful and instead of having a separate report for these they could also be included in the UncategorizedCategories report (if not, it could be linked from there).
The second would probably need some refinements and good Wikidata-integrated ways for completing that backlog. For example, it can be good – maybe even optimal – if all categories of the cat were set from the Wikidata Infobox template. This often means that only having Wikidata Infobox cats is fine, so maybe it only show items with few of specific WDI cats like the example one.
- (Skip this for now: One could also have bots & gadgets that convert WMC cats to Wikidata Infobox entries – for example if there is a Category:Births in Przeworsk or it is being set on a category about a human, one could transfer that to the Wikidata entry for birth-place and the same for Category:1954 births where birth year would be set and then auto-set if the Wikidata Infobox is set on the category. That's useful for cats for humans, but maybe not many other cases though so this could become a broader subject and certainly wouldn't be easy. WMC cats for individuals are a special case and also note that if only the additional cat for the birth year is set that could be an issue to although for most people-cats there are barely any files so integrating these into the category structure well doesn't seem useful or important.)
Moreover, I think the discussion linked at the top of the page probably should be removed, that Special:WantedCategories needs some work to be actually useful which it could be (such as separating many of the top items to a separate list or adding notes to items), and that there probably should be way more bots that help with these backlogs (such as identifying likely problematic things and potential changes to confirm quickly). - @Prototyperspective: Try category:Uses of Wikidata Infobox with no item and Special:WantedCategories (via Special:SpecialPages). To see the first category, you will need to amend your css to show a class for maintenance/hidden cats. Look at my css at m:User:Billinghurst/global.css for how to do that. — billinghurst sDrewth 20:01, 20 February 2024 (UTC)
- Both of these categories aren't what I meant and don't contain these. The first one shows categories with missing WikiData item and the second redcategories. But I was asking about categories with Wikidata item but only automatically set categories and existing categories that contain only nonexisting categories. - Looks like Enhancing999 (talk · contribs) just implemented the second part of this with the new report Commons:Report UncategorizedCategories with infobox. Thanks for this! Could you also create a report for cats with only redcategories?
- Then this would be solved and all categories practically without categorization show up on some report. A next step thereafter I think would be to have some bot identify cats missing cats and making e.g. Suggested Edits category suggestions, for example using data of the corresponding WP article. I'll also leave a comment in the VP discussion. Prototyperspective (talk) 12:33, 28 August 2024 (UTC)
- Seems like the report is only for items with empty infobox (no linked Wikidata item but the infobox template) so it's not the second point above. However, maybe the query can be forked so that it lists these (categories with nothing but metacategories set by the Wikidata infobox). Prototyperspective (talk) 23:25, 29 August 2024 (UTC)
- Request Quarry query here. Prototyperspective (talk) 23:42, 24 September 2024 (UTC)

- Solved: The reports have been created and are now here: Commons:Report UncategorizedCategories with redcats & Commons:Report UncategorizedCategories with only infobox categories. A request to have these get updated by a bot will be added to Commons:Bots/Work requests here.
- The info that I needed here is that a) a Quarry query is needed for this and could do this b) that the place to request such a query is the site linked above.
- This section is resolved and can be archived. If you disagree, replace this template with your comment. --Prototyperspective (talk) 16:32, 7 October 2024 (UTC)Prototyperspective (talk) 16:32, 7 October 2024 (UTC)
