Oppose We try to follow wikipedia names and certainly avoid slashes in names as this creates confusion (subpages in main name space) and problems with some tools. --Foroa (talk) 06:45, 14 November 2010 (UTC)
- Hi Foroa. Why you always rename the categories without any discussion ? This category was previously named Category:ARP/Solina_String-Ensemble, but a few days ago you renamed it without any prior discussion, and the result is incorrect!
- Brand name is not "ARP Solina". "ARP" and "Solina" are different brand.
- Product name should be "String-Ensemble" (See the product plate).
- You should propose the renaming and discuss the new name, before you rename it arbitrarily without consultation.
- Moreover, you should show the grounds of your opinion that category name on Wikimedia Commons (not the Wikipedia!) should not be contained the slash and hyphen characters. I couldn't find it anywhere on Wikimedia Commons. --Clusternote (talk) 17:15, 14 November 2010 (UTC)
- I rename 500 to 2000 categories per month, mainly for harmonisation, disambiguation and syntax reasons and without discussions. Here, we have a problem with a slash along with the fact that the category name is completely different from the names used by our wikipedia clients. I don't think that it is a good idea to mix the names from early and later versions of the instrument as in Category:Arp/Solina String-Ensemble; that way, nobody finds it back. I would say that "ARP String Ensemble" is the original name, and "ARP Solina String Ensemble" has to redirect to it. It might be a good idea to isolate the sound files in a separate subcategory. What do you think ? --Foroa (talk) 17:51, 14 November 2010 (UTC)
- Concerning the slashes, long and short EM dashes,& ,@ in category names, this is indeed some growing de facto standard for which I will propose formal rules in the coming weeks. --Foroa (talk) 17:51, 14 November 2010 (UTC)
- Sorry for my late response. I know your great contributions on Wikimedia Commons, and I think you are cool but kindly person. Also I always thank for your contributions.
- After submitting the previous comment, I've repeatedly considered this issue:
- there are two instruments "Solina String Ensemble", and "ARP String Ensemble" , but users often call both "ARP Solina String Ensemble" because both are exactly same instruments except for brand logo.
- the previous name "ARP/Solina String-Ensemble" may be possibly most accurate description for this instrument family (both ARP and Solina), if we can disregard issues on Wikimedia/Wikipedia.
- though, on Wikimedia/Wikipedia, variation of notations may be possibly small ignorable issue. For example, English and Polish Wikipedia called it "ARP String Ensemble", but Deutsch and Dutch Wikipedia called it "ARP Solina String Ensemble".
- As a result, my proposal is following:
- "Category:Solina String Ensemble" for original product by Eminent/Solina.
- Note: most media except for sound files will be re-categorized into it.
- "Category:ARP String Ensemble" for variant (OEM) of above, released from ARP
- "Category:ARP Solina String Ensemble" may be redirected to here.
- Note: only 1 media (File:ARP Solina String Ensemble.jpg) will be re-categorized into it.
- "Category:ARP Solina String Ensemble sound" or similar name for sound files.
- Can we reach the agreement ? --Clusternote (talk) 14:31, 15 November 2010 (UTC)
- My major grief with the previous Category:Arp/Solina String-Ensemble name were the used slash, Arp was not in capitals as the brand name and the name did not correspond with any of the two names used by our client wikipedias. If you want to rename it as you propose it, fine with me, although I personally don't feel the need to make a separate category for that one picture about the same instrument but with another sticker on it. Category:ARP Solina String Ensemble sounds should be plural, although Category:Music by instrument and Category:Music sound will need substantial clean up and renaming one day. --Foroa (talk) 18:21, 15 November 2010 (UTC)
- OK, I'll avoid the use of slash and hyphen as far as it is rational choice. Also, I'll use the notation "ARP" because it is widely used conventional notation (describe later). And I'll change the term "sound" into its plural form, "sounds".
- Note: brand name "ARP" is acronym of founder Alan Robert Pearlman, and almost all languages version of Wikipedia articles use "ARP" as its conventional notation. I don't know the reason. Probably because its capitalized form "Arp" is too ambiguous.
- Many thanks for your kindly discussion ! --Clusternote (talk) 02:30, 16 November 2010 (UTC)
Done The category was split into three categories (Category:Solina String Ensemble, Category:ARP String Ensemble, Category:ARP Solina String Ensemble sound), and this category itself was redirected into Category:ARP String Ensemble. --Clusternote (talk) 03:46, 30 November 2010 (UTC)
