Light-toned materials on Mars are found in layers, on the surface, and shaped into features called yardangs. They are sometimes associated with clays and hydrated minerals, especially sulfates. Hydrated minerals were formed in the presence of water, so they mark where water once existed. .[1] [2] [3] [4]
