English: The rural Nordhausen District was founded in 1816 and was renamed at times (1888-1945) as Grafschaft Hohenstein District (Hohenstein County District), its administration is based in Nordhausen at the Harz Mountains. Nordhausen itself formed an urban district between 1882 and 1945, being part of the rural district before and thereafter. Between 1816 and 1945 the district formed part of the Erfurt Region in the Prussian Province of Saxony, thereafter ist formed a district if greater Thuringia.
