Category:Laggan, Islay
Laggan, Islay, has a double meaning. In a more restricted sense it means small settlement on the south coast of Laggan Point, a promontory in Loch Indaal defining the northern coast of Laggan Bay. In a larger sense it means the Laggan Estate, a privately owned tract of land, one of five into which an original Islay Estate, owned and managed by the clans, became divided. This land was leased out to crofters. Much reverted to the government, coming under the public domain. Laggan Estate is a corporate entity, supporting numerous enterprises of real estate and recreation. Its boundaries encompass a tract starting south of Bowmore and running to the north of Glenegedale, except for a small strip south of the airport. It comprises essentially Laggan Point, the lower Laggan and Duich Rivers, the northern Big Strand and the machair behind it.
