Gaston Ernest Liébert (1866-1929) was born in Paris in 1866. He entered the Naval College in 1884 and served in the Navy for seven years. In 1893 he entered the diplomatic corps and was sent to the Far East in 1898. He served as French Vice-Consul to Pakhoi, China and Tunghing, China from 1899 to 1901; envoy for a special mission to the French Legation in Peking following the Boxer Rebellion, 1901 to 1902; French Consul to Hong Kong, 1903 to 1916; and Consul-General in New York in 1916. He died in 1929.
