The reason for the fortification was the protection of the Dutch trading post in regard to expected clashes with the British (short time later outbreak of the English-Dutch-French Sea War (1688)) and to can meet better with possible hostilities of the native Eguafo's (who had destroyed the Dutch factory in 1681). Fort Vredenburg existed until 1781 as it was destroyed (blusted) by the British.
