This category and its sub-cats are intended for images of all atmospheric optical phenomena, ie phenomena of optical nature happening within Earth's atmosphere.
These phenomena can involve several types of physical processes:
- light rays and shadows projecting on air, sometimes in association with light scattering (shadows of clouds or contrails, of mountains, Earth's shadow and the Belt of Venus; opposition effects; Crepuscular rays; Brocken spectres);
- Refraction in layers of air (looming, mirages, Green flash);
- Refraction in water drops (rainbows) or ice crystals (haloes);
- Diffraction around small particles (coronae, glories);
- extra-atmospheric agents interfering with the atmosphere: the aurora is not strictly speaking Atmospheric Optics, as it involves particles coming from space. However, it is traditionally considered a branch of At Optics, as well as the airglow. Aurorae are known to happen on other planets of the Solar system.
