Women's fashion in European and European-influenced countries in the 1880s went through three phases (as seen in the image below): The early 1880s was a continuation of the tight dress styles of the late 1870s (dresses during this period often had a train trailing behind); the mid-1880s (from about 1883-1886) was marked by the growing prominence of bustles; and the late 1880s was transitional to the 1890s.

The three phases of 1880s fashions: Left - early 1880s daywear; Center - late 1880s eveningwear; Right - mid-1880s daywear, with full "back-shelf" bustle.
